The USS Cairo Commemorative Set
By Dana Hinkel

On December 12, 1862, the USS Cairo, along with three escort ships,
patrolled the Yazoo River looking for mines.
Upon beginning its trip down the Yazoo,The Cairo struck a mine sinking the ironclad in a mere twelve minutes, making it the first U.S. warship to be sunk by torpedo or mine.
No member of the crew was lost during the sinking of the Cairo.  To commemorate the sinking of the Hard Luck Ironclad,
Wild Calls LTD has created a commemoration set of
duck calls remembering not only the ship but the members of the crew.
Three small white oak boards were produced
From the Cairo and have been preserved in this set of three metal reed suck calls.

First, there is the Captain’s Call.
The call has gold and platinum inlays representing the Naval insignia-a wreath and an eagle with an anchor. The metal reed is fourteen carat gold.
The Officer’s Call has a sterling silver inlayed
1862 naval insignia and silver metal reed.
Finally, the Enlisted Man’s Call is inlayed
with a bronze anchor and has a bronze metal reed.

By possessing this set, the owner will not only have the most expensive set of metal reed duck calls in the world,But also hold a piece of rare Civil War and U.S. Naval History.

- by Dana Hinkel

Forty years ago, a great storm passed though North Mississippi. The sky grew dark and everything still and quiet. A tornado rapidly approached hitting everything in its way, including a small hickory tree. Sand and other debris was thrown through the air hitting the small tree and causing great damage-the sand embedding into the tree’s woody skin.

The tornado passed, the sky cleared, and all was left was a small portion of the hickory tree embedded with the sand particles. The top had vanished- torn from itself and thrown far away.

The years passed, forty years precisely, and the tree continued to grow taller and taller. Lumberjacks entered the area where the old hickory stood and began to harvest the trees to be used for making multiple things. Only the bottom 2/3 of the hickory was useful to the lumberjacks. The top 1/3 was the little tree that had survived the great tornado forty years before. The tree was milled, and the top of the hickory was going to be sent away and burned for fuel. It couldn’t be used for anything else. The embedded sand had caused the wood to be different, hence it couldn’t be used to make beautiful things.

Only four damaged boards remained from the tree when a wood seller noticed the wood. Its uniqueness fascinated him, and he knew that someday it could be made into something beautiful. He saved those boards and took them to his wood shop.

The hickory boards sat at the man’s store waiting to be bought, when they were eventually discovered by a man with a mission. This man sought out to create the most beautiful and unique duck calls in the world.

Here sits the duck call made from the damaged, unusable board, which was cut from the tree, who was hit forcefully with sand and debris by a great tornado, and survived forty years ago.

This call was featured in the National Call Makers and Collectibles seasonal publication.
The Tornado Hickory call can be purchased as a set or individually.
